Charles L. Herman, 88, of Emporia, KS and a longtime resident of Alma, KS, passed away Sunday, December 19, 2010 at the Newman Memorial Hospital in Emporia. Charles was born May 19, 1922 in Alma, KS, the son of Fred and Mary A. Schubert Herrmann. He attended Alma schools and graduated from Alma High School in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army Air-Corp from 1942 until his discharge in 1946. On May 25, 1963 he married Charlotte V. Finley in Ord, NE. She preceded him in death in 1993. He then married Carol Hermann on Dec. 31, 1994 in Emporia, KS. She survives of the home. Charles worked as a U.S. Soil Conservation Service Technician until his retirement in 1981. Mr. Herman was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church of Alma, where he served many years on the church council. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 32 of Alma, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, a charter member of the Wabaunsee County Historical Society, and past member of the Topeka Camera Club. He enjoyed photography and was an accomplished photographer, winning serveral amateur contests. Many of his photos have been displayed in area businesses and offices. Survivors include his wife Carol of Emporia, KS; a step-daughter, Debra Vanderman and husband Bruce, of Madison, KS; a nephew, John Herrmann of Topeka, KS; two nieces, Nyrna Rise of Auburn, KS, Genevieve Armstrong of Berryton, KS; one step-grandson, Josh Vanderman. He was also preceded in death by 5 brothers, Fred, Hugo, Milton, Arthur, and Leroy, and his sister Gisella McKinsey. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Alma. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Herman will lie-in-state beginning at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Stewart Funeral Home of Alma, where a Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. with family greeting friends until 8:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Holy Family Catholic Church and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home of Alma, PO Box 126, 66401. www.stewartfuneralhomes.com
