Donis “Donnie” McKeeman Curtis, 89, of Wamego, Kansas, died Tuesday, December 21, 2010, at Good Samaritan Society-Valley Vista, Wamego, Kansas. She was born January 3, 1921, in Manhattan, KS, to Warren and Bess McKeeman. Donnie attended Manhattan schools and graduated from Manhattan High School in 1939. She graduated in 1940 from Sacred Heart Academy, a business school formerly in Manhattan.
Donnie worked for five years in Civilian Personnel at Fort Riley, KS. She married Robert “Bob” Curtis on August 16, 1945, in Junction City. He preceded her in death August 7, 1993. Mr. and Mrs. Curtis lived in California before moving to Wamego, where they established Curtis Cleaners in 1947. They owned and operated the dry cleaning business for a number of years. Mrs. Curtis later worked for Town and Country Clothing store in Wamego. Donnie had been a member of First United Methodist Church, Wamego, since 1947. She taught Sunday school there and also worked in the church kitchen helping prepare funeral dinners. Mrs. Curtis was instrumental in establishing the Girl Scout program in Wamego. She was formerly a member of the Wamego Lioness Club, Wamego Business and Professional Women’s Club, Wamego American Legion Auxiliary, Wamego City Hospital Auxiliary, Wamego Historical Society and Wamego Rebekah Lodge.
Her survivors include two daughters, Sherry Wilson and her husband Larry, Wamego, and Leslie Green and her husband Lance, Shawnee, KS; two grandchildren: Amy McLemore and her husband Rob, Wamego, KS, and Jason Green and his wife Katy, Shawnee, KS; four great-grandchildren, Griffin and Trey McLemore, Wamego, KS, and Grace and Claire Green, Shawnee, KS; numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a sister, Wanda Coleman.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, on Tuesday, December 28, 2010, at First United Methodist Church, Wamego. Burial will follow in Wamego City Cemetery. Donnie will lie in-state beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 27, 2010. The family will receive friends during a visitation from 7-8:30 p.m. on Monday at Stewart Funeral Home, Wamego.
