Kathrine Mildred “May” Kurtz, 93, of Wamego, formerly of Blaine, KS, passed away Friday, January 14, 2011 at The Good Shepherd Hospice House, in Manhattan, KS. Mildred May was born September 26, 1917 in Bigelow, Kansas, to Samuel and Elizabeth (Dignam) Ensley. She attended Rural School #32 near Bigelow then rural school near Blue Rapids. On September 27, 1939 she married David Kurtz in Concordia, KS, he preceded her in death in 2009. May moved to Wamego in December of 2008, coming from the farm outside Blaine, KS. May was a self-employed dairy farmer and rancher alongside her husband for more than 45 years and was also a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening and taking walks. May loved flowers and was a great cook, but most importantly she loved being with family and friends. She had a strong belief in the Lord and enjoyed reading her Bible daily. She was also a member of Westmoreland United Methodist Church. May is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Whearty, of Wamego; her sister Roselea Dresser; a brother Gordon Ensley and a sister-in-law Grace Ensley; 6 grandchildren: Catherine Emig and husband Roger, Stephen Whearty, Joyce Princ and husband Doug, Joan Little and husband Les, Kenneth Whearty and wife Kerry and Paul Todd and 13 great-grandchildren. Her parents, husband David, daughter Cleota, 6 brothers: Jesse, Roy, Lawrence, George, Ray and Milton Ensley, 2 sisters; Faye Harrison and Elvira Wells all preceded her to the life beyond. A celebration of Mildred’s life will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 19, 2011, at Westmoreland United Methodist Church, Westmoreland, KS. Interment will follow at Antioch Cemetery, Frankfort, Kansas. She will lie in-state beginning at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 18, 2011 with family greeting friends during a visitation from 7-8 p.m. at Stewart Funeral Home, Wamego. Memorials are suggested to the Westmoreland United Methodist Church or Good Shepherd Hospice House, Manhattan, KS, and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, PO Box 48, 66547.
