Dennis Lee Songs

December 20, 1955 — April 11, 2007

Dennis Lee Songs, 51, formerly of Wamego, KS joined the Lord’s Choir of Angels on April 11, 2007, passing away at Stoneybrook Retirement Community in Manhattan. Dennis was the seventh child born to Chester Raymond and Bernadine Ella (Niedfeldt) Songs on December 20, 1955. Dennis was born with Downs Syndrome. He was typical of all Downs syndrome children in that he was always happy and loving. Dennis was loved and well cared for by both his parents and siblings during his early years. He moved from several different locations but usually managed to be with his family members during the holidays. He first lived in Topeka at Kansas Neurological Institute for about eight years. Then he lived in Parsons, Kansas for several years and Ottawa, Kansas for twelve years. In 2001 he moved to Manhattan at Big Lakes Development. While in Ottawa he worked at Dairy Queen and Wal-Mart and a manufacturing company making oxygen systems for airline companies. Most recently he worked making patterns for McCall Pattern Company through Big Lakes Development. Dennis loved to dance and be around animals-especially dogs. He enjoyed birthday parties and eating cake. Spending time with his family was very important and special to him. He is survived by: his four sisters, Carol Hansing of Ridgecrest, CA, Bonnie Palenske and husband Jim of Wamego, Ella Hesse and husband John of Meriden, and Jaqueline Wohler of Riley; his three brothers, Ray Songs and wife Nancy of Wamego, David Songs and wife Cynthia of Durham, NC, and Tim Songs and wife Traci of Alma; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and a host of cousins, who all have a special place in their hearts for Dennis. Funeral Services are to be 11:00 a.m., Monday April 16, at Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, with Pastor Robert Grimm officiating. Burial will follow in Wabaunsee Township Cemetery. He will lie in state Sunday April 15, at 2:00 p.m., with visitation following from 3-5:00 p.m. A memorial has been established in Dennis’ name St. John’s Lutheran Church or Manhattan Area Hospice and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home Wamego, P.O. Box 48, 66547.
