Loran H. Martens, 81, of rural Wabaunsee, Kansas, passed away Thursday, February 24, 2011 at the Wamego City Hospital.
Loran was born February 16, 1930, the son of Henry F. and Anna (Schweir) Martens, on his family farm in the Wells Creek community south of Belvue, Kansas. He attended District 54 rural school near Wells Creek before working on the family farm with his brothers. Loran farmed with his brother William all of his life. Loran never married, but was very close to his loving family of his brothers, his twin sister, and many nieces and nephews. He was a member of the Wells Creek Immanuel Faith Community Church.
He loved working on the farm. He did most of the cooking and housekeeping for his brother William and himself. He enjoyed being with all the animals, especially his cats. His sense of humor was appreciated by many, and he always enjoyed watching western movies and shows.
His survivors include a twin sister, Ethel Nelson of Topeka, KS; his brother, William Martens of their farm in Wabaunsee; two nieces, Kathy Schmidtberger and Sue Kirkendall, both of Topeka, KS; four nephews, John and Jerry Martens, Ken Nelson, all of Topeka, KS, and Don Nelson of Greenville, SC.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John Martens, in 1985.
Funeral services for Mr. Martens will be Monday, February 28, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. at the Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego with the Rev. Rick Wright officiating. Burial will follow in the Wabaunsee Cemetery. A visitation will be held Sunday, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Wells Creek Immanuel Faith Community Church and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home, P.O. Box 48, 66547.
