Ignatius "Nates" Emmanuel Umscheid

Ignatius “Nates” Umscheid, 80, of Wamego and formerly of Flush, KS, passed away Saturday, April 23, 2011 at the Wamego City Hospital, Wamego, KS. He was a life-long resident of the area. Nates was born September 1, 1930 in Flush, KS to Phillip Peter and Elizabeth (Gasser) Umscheid. He attended the Catholic school in Flush and graduated from Flush High School in 1949. On October 17, 1955, he married Dorothy Dekat at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Flush. She survives of the home. Nates was a farmer and stockman on the family farm southeast of Flush where he was born and raised. He was also very talented with wood and carpentry work and helped remodel the homes of several family members over the years. In 2003, he and Dorothy retired to Wamego. He was a current member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church of Wamego and an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 902. Nates was a very loving husband, father and grandfather, and had a fun sense of humor. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of the home; seven children: Darlene (Mike) Stottmann, Topeka, Diane (Mike) O’Shea, Flush, Doris (Steve) Schwartz, Wamego, Randy Umscheid, Flush, Russell (Kristy) Umscheid, Flush, Renee West, Salina and Rachelle (Kevin) Olson, Raytown, MO; a sister Doretha Wells, Manhattan; a brother Delbert Umscheid, Wamego; 20 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Tony and Eugene; four sisters: Loretta Straub, Alvira Umscheid, Estelle Farrell and Lucile Ubel; and a son-in-law, Billy Decker. A rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27, followed by a visitation until 9:00 p.m. at Stewart Funeral Home, Wamego, where Mr. Umscheid will lie in-state beginning at 1:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 28, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Flush, KS. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Flush or St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Wamego and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, Wamego, 66547.
