Vivian “Loraine” (Oppy) Schurr, 83, of St. George, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan, Kansas.
Loraine was born on April 21, 1928 in Minneapolis, Kansas, the daughter of Clarence and Ivy L. (Kretzmeier) Oppy. She grew up in the Council Grove and Wellington, Kansas areas before graduating from Wellington High School in 1946 and attending Bethany College, all before moving to St. George in 1946. On August 16, 1946 she married Dale G. Schurr in Wamego, Kansas, he survives of the home.
Loraine was a bookkeeper working for Kaw Valley Bank of Wamego, Morton Motors and KSU International Agriculture. Loraine loved swimming, birds, crocheting, traveling and gardening and enjoyed going camping and fishing. She enjoyed music and playing the organ and was a huge K-State basketball fan. Most importantly she loved her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wamego, where she also in the past worked in the office and was a Sunday school teacher. She also was a member of the Coachman Camping Club and a volunteer for Heartland Shares.
Loraine is survived by her husband Dale Schurr, of their home in St. George; her four children: Steven Schurr and wife Elaine, of Elkhorn, NE, Patricia Schurr, of the home, Ranae Martin, of St. George, KS and Terri Lamb and husband Larry of Lacona, IA; two brothers: William Oppy (Barbara) of Ft. Collins, CO and Richard Oppy (Susan) of Bartlesville, OK; 6 grandsons, 1 granddaughter, 4 great-grandsons and 2 great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepmother Ethel (Boese) Oppy and her in-laws.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service for Loraine will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2011 at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. A visitation will take place at Stewart Funeral Home on Friday, April 29; at 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Burial will be held in St. George Cemetery at a later date.
