Opal Lucille Smith

April 15, 1922 — June 4, 2007

Westmoreland-Opal Lucille Smith, 85, passed away peacefully Monday June 4, 2007 at her home. Born on April 14, 1922 in rural Wheaton, she was the daughter of Don and Delia (McClellan) Reeves. She grew up in Westmoreland area on the family farm and later graduated from Westmoreland High school in 1940. On August 29, 1942, she married Chester H. Smith in Westmoreland. He preceded her in death in 1996. She worked for the WSCS for several years, was a school bus driver for USD 323 for many years, and was one of the first women bus drivers for the school. Opal also worked at DeChairo Hospital in Westmoreland for 25 years. She was a member of the Moodyville Social Club, and volunteered as a Girl Scout leader and also as a Boy Scout Den mother. Opal was an amazing mother and wife, and enjoyed helping and being with people. Survivors include her daughter, Vicky Wahl, of Flush, Ks; three sisters, Frances Tunison, Topeka, Ks, Edna May Taylor and husband Dean of Westmoreland, Ks, Verla Webster and husband LeRoy of Westmoreland, Ks; and Lyle Reves and wife Laura Mae of Burlingame, Ks; her five grandchildren Scott Smith of Colorado, Shawn Smith of Westmoreland, Ks, Michael Heptig of Topeka, Ks, and Carrie and Leslie Smith of Wamego, Ks; and four great-grandchildren; and her daughter-in-law, Shelley Smith of Wamego, Ks. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Wesley Smith and her grandson Matthew Heptig. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday June 7, 2007 at Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego with burial following in Westmoreland Cemetery. A visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6:30-8:00 p.m.. The family suggests memorials toward the Westmoreland Area “Mini Bus” and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, P.O. Box 48, 66547.
