Sgt. Harold Edwin Fechter
Born February 12, 1923, in St. George, KS, he was the son of Arthur and Julia (Picolet) Fechter. He was raised on the family farm and later graduated from St. George High School. In February 1943 Harold enlisted with the United States Army. He received his training through Camp Houzie in Ft. Sam, Houston, Texas. He was sent overseas in December 1943 and served a month and a half in North Africa before going to Italy. He took part in the battle for Cassino, the liberation of Rome, and was in Bologne, Italy when he was reported missing on October 3, 1944. On December 16, 1944, his family was notified that he had been killed in action but that they were unable to locate him due to the massive explosion. In October of 2006, the Fechter’s were notified of the discovery of Harold’s remains. Now nearly 63 years later, Harold will finally be laid to rest.
Harold is survived by: his brothers, Victor of Manhattan, KS, Vinson, Dean and Larry of Wamego, KS; and his sister, Edith Torrey of Wamego, KS. Memorials are suggested to the Injured American Soldier’s Fund and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, P.O. Box 48, 66547.
