Norma Jean Yonning

Norma Jean Yonning, 84, of the Wamego, Kansas area, passed away Sunday, August 7, 2011 at Westy Community Care Home, Westmoreland, Kansas. Norma was born December 31, 1926 on the family farm near Louisville, Kansas, the daughter of Clifford C. and Margaret C. (Schumacher) Julien. She attended grade school in Louisville, and graduated from Wamego High School in 1945. On February 24, 1946 she married George William Yonning in Wamego, they later divorced. Norma cooked at the Student Union at Kansas State University before becoming a nurse’s aide at Memorial Hospital in Manhattan, Kansas where she had her dream job working with babies in the nursery. She later went to work at Wharton Manor, in Manhattan. Norma was a nurse’s aide for over 20 years before retiring. After retiring Norma was a homemaker and enjoyed volunteering for the Wamego VFW. Norma loved abandoned houses, Indian artifacts and sewing. She was a great cook and was a member of the Wamego United Methodist Church. She is survived by one daughter: Shirley Bowers and husband Doug, of Junction City, KS; one son: Dale Yonning and wife Jackie, of Westmoreland, KS; one daughter in-law: Cheryl Yonning, of Wamego, KS; two sisters: Fern Worthing and Helen Koppenheffer; seven grandchildren: Jeff, Jim, Kristi, Karen, Michelle, Nicole and Curtis; three step-grandchildren: Todd, Richard and Kristy; 25 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter and multiple nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons: Gary and Doug, one brother Dean Julien and two sisters: Ruth Eichman and Delores Michaelis. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 13, 2011 at the Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego. Burial will follow in the Wamego City Cemetery. A visitation will be held Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral service. The family has asked for Norma’s casket to be closed.
