Arlene Theresa Unterberger, 98, of rural St. George and Wamego areas, passed away Sunday, September 18, 2011 at Via Christi Village, Manhattan, Kansas.
Arlene was born October 14, 1912, in Ratone, New Mexico, while her parents were with a threshing crew. She was the youngest daughter of Alfred and Caroline Vogl. She grew up in Wamego and attended schools in Wamego. In her younger years she worked in her brother’s hamburger shop, babysat and helped families in private homes. On June 12, 1934, she married Peter J. (Pinky) Unterberger. He preceded her in death on April 23, 1991.
Arlene was baptized at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ratone, New Mexico. Arlene belonged to the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Flush for over 60 years and was also a member of the Altar Society. Most recently she was a member of Seven Dolars Catholic Church in Manhattan. She also enjoyed her friends with the Stitch and Chatter Club.
She is survived by her children: Rita Almarez, of Topeka, KS, Kenneth Unterberger and wife Betty, of St. George, KS, Gerald Unterberger, of St. George, KS, Frieda (Fritz) Ebert, Cleta Dickson and Tom Unterberger and wife Helen, all of Manhattan, KS; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Arlene was preceded in death by her husband, and her seven siblings.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 23, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Arlene will lie in-state beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday followed by a rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. and visitation until 8:30 p.m. at Stewart Funeral Home, Wamego.
