Delno Howard Goehring, 87, of Westmoreland, KS, passed away Sunday, October 2, 2011 at the Westy Community Care Home. He was born January 29, 1924 in the Broderick Community, the son of Arthur Frank and Anna Augusta (Blume) Goehring.
Delno attended Broderick Grade School and graduated from Wamego Rural High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II in Hawaii and the Pacific area. He was a crew member on the LST 802. They were a part of a convey that went to Midway, Guam and Saipan.Delno was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wamego, the Westmoreland AF & AM Lodge No. 257, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry Club of Topeka, Arab Shrine Club of Topeka, Kaw Valley Shrine Club of Wamego, the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter No. 209 of Manhattan and the American Legion Post No. 172 of Wamego.
On December 27, 1947, Delno married Mabel Faye Lewis at the Riley Methodist Church in Riley, Kansas. She survives of Westmoreland. Delno was a farmer and also worked for the Topeka Goodyear Plant, Kansas Department of Transportation, and the Soil Conservation Service. He was also part-owner and operator of the Goehring-Bairow Insurance Agency in Wamego, before his retirement in 1990. Delno enjoyed traveling with his family to Germany, Italy and England to see relatives and ancestral homes. In his later years he enjoyed deer hunting with his boys and tinkering with his antique truck.
Delno is survived by his wife Mabel; his three sons: LeRoy Goehring and Leland Goehring both of Wamego and Mark Goehring and wife Connie of Oakley, Kansas; one brother: Lester of Manhattan, Kansas; three grandchildren: Jeremy, Jami and Tracy; two step-grandchildren: Patricia and Shanae and three great-grandchildren: Oakley, Trig and Jordyn. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Gilbert and Kenneth.
Cremation has taken affect. A memorial service for Mr. Goehring will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 6, 2011 at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. Inurnment will follow at the Wamego City Cemetery with full Military Honors. The family will greet friends during a visitation Wednesday from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Stewart Funeral Home, Wamego. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church, Wamego, the Westmoreland AF & AM Lodge # 257, Shriners Hospital or to the American Heart Association, and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, PO Box 48, 66547.
