Johnie B. Johnson, 89, passed away Thursday, July 12th, 2007 at his home in Wamego.
Born on May 7, 1918 in Burlington, Colorado, he was the son of John O. and Grace (Munson) Johnson. Johnie graduated from Lebanon High School in Lebanon, Kansas before enlisting with the United States Army Air Corp to serve his country during WWII. He served in India as an airplane mechanic supervisor and was Master Sergeant. On May 10, 1942, he married Alma (Salzer) in Wichita Falls, Texas. After the war, Johnie worked at Daylor Motors in Wamego for thirteen years. He later farmed his family’s farm from 1957-1970. In 1971 he owned and operated Quality Auto Parts Inc., with his son Richard until 2001. His wife preceded him in death on July 13, 2001.
Johnie was a member of the United Methodist Church in Wamego as well as a member of the Senior Citizens Center. He enjoyed woodworking and loved spending time with his family and his friends.
Survivors include: his sons, Jim Johnson and wife Linda of Paris, TX, Don Johnson and wife Donna of Wamego, KS, and Fred Johnson of Wamego, KS; his daughters, Janie Edwards and husband Ed of Kansas City KS, and Jodi Niehoff and husband Chad of Erie, Colorado; his seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren; and his one great grand child. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son Richard in 2001.
Graveside Funeral Services with military honors will be 10:30 a.m. Monday July 16 at Wamego City Cemetery. Mr. Johnson will lie in state on Sunday from 12-5 at the Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego, where the family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Wamego Senior Citizen’s Center and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home, P.O.
