St. George- David (Dave) H. Stewart, 67, a resident of the Lake Elbo area east of Manhattan, KS, died Monday, July 23, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka following a sudden heart attack.
Dave was born on January 9, 1940 in Concordia, KS, the son of Paul W. and Madelyn M. (Howell) Stewart. He attended St. Gregory’s Catholic Grade School in Marysville, KS, and attended Goff High School after his family moved to Goff, KS. Following school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany from 1957 thru 1959. After his military service, Dave worked as a truck driver for many years and was a heavy equipment operator for the last 25 years. On June 30, 1962, Dave married Jean Ann Jones in Frankfort, KS. She survives him.
Dave was a longtime member, and very active in the St. George Black Jack American Legion. He enjoyed being with his family, spending time at his son’s trucking business, (Stewart Trucking in Westmoreland) visiting with all the guys, and especially being with his grandchildren and attending their events. He had a fun sense of humor which he shared with his friends.
Dave is survived by his wife, Jean, of the home; his two sons, Scott Stewart and his wife Terri, of St. Marys, KS, and Jeff Stewart of Westmoreland and Terri Gee and her daughter Whitney Gee, of Summerfield, KS; his mother, Madelyn Howell Stewart Turnbull, Chapman, KS; two brothers, Bill Stewart, of Chapman, KS, Tom Stewart, Omaha, NE; three step-brothers, Max Turnbull, Jr., of Vleits, KS, Roger Turnbull, Frankfort, KS, Ronald Turnbull, Axtell, KS; and his four grandchildren, John, James, Madelyn, and Emily Stewart. David was preceded in death by Terri’s son Seth Gee.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 28, at 10:30 a.m. at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, with burial to follow in the Antioch Cemetery, southwest of Frankfort, KS. The St. George American Legion will provide military burial honors.
Mr. Stewart will lie in-state at the funeral home beginning at 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 27, with a visitation that evening from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Memorials contributions are suggested to the Black Jack Legion Educational Fund or to the Antioch Cemetery Fund, and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home, P.O.
