Mary Agnes (Radell) Hund, 95, a long time resident of Paxico, Kansas, passed away November 23, 2011 at Alma Manor Nursing Home , Alma, Kansas.
She was born December 4, 1915 in Pittsburg, Kansas to George V. and Cecelia (Gainer) Radell. Mary graduated from Pittsburg High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Pittsburg State University and took advanced educational classes at Kansas State University. She taught at Paxico High School from 1937-1939 and served as Kansas State University Extension Agent for Wyandotte County from 1939-1942.
She married Stephen F. Hund on Nov. 28, 1942 in Pittsburg, Kansas. He preceded her in death on Nov. 19, 1996. Mary was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Alter Society. She was a charter member of the Wabaunsee County Historical Society and established their research library. Mary was a co-founder of the Newbury 4-H Club and served as a project leader for 20 years. She served on the Wabaunsee County Extension Council and Women’s Advisory Committee. She was politically active as Democratic precinct committee person and central committee officer.
Mary was co-founder and first chairperson of the Paxico Senior Citizens Center. She was a member and officer of the Wabaunsee County Council on Aging, a committee member of the Wabaunsee County Home Health Program and the Alma Nursing Home Auxiliary Committee. Mary was a member of the Kansas Women’s Golf Association and a 15-year officer of the Wamego Country Club. In later years, Mary developed into an excellent artist and her many paintings are in homes of family and friends.
Mary and Stephen farmed along Mill Creek during their 54 years of marriage. She was a excellent gardener and homemaker. They were the parents of six children: Ann Murphy and her husband Pat of Manhattan, Patricia Wing and husband Dennis of Sedalia, Colorado, Steve “Bud” Hund and wife Kathy of Paxico, John Hund and wife Terry of Paxico, Cecelia Hund-Reid and husband John of Edmonton, Canada, and Denise Wojdynski and her husband Ray of Reno, Nevada. She leaves behind 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, George, Clarence, and Mike; and two sisters, Nora Ann Radell and Helen Neary.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Newbury, Paxico, KS. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Hund will lie in-state at the church beginning at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, with a Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. followed by family greeting friends during a visitation until 9:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, or the Wabaunsee County Historical Society and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, 66547.
