Harry Kost Dawson, 75, long time resident of Wamego, passed away suddenly on August 9, 2007. He suffered from heart disease.
Mr. Dawson was born in Hays, Kansas the son of William Arthur and Anna Louise (Kost) Dawson on December 8, 1931. Harry grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in 1949. He attended Kansas State University until he joined the United States Marine Corps.
After serving four years in the Marine Corps, he joined the United States Air Force and retired from the military in 1972. Upon his retirement, he returned to Kansas State University and earned his BS. He later went on to earn his Bachelor of Nursing Degree from Stormont Vail School of Nursing in 1976. Mr. Dawson worked at Wamego City Hospital as a Registered Nurse from 1976 until his retirement in 1992.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary of the home; three sons, Mark Dawson and wife Sherri of Wichita, KS, Dean Dawson and wife Diane of Wamego, KS, and Kenneth Dawson of Niceville, FL; one daughter, Kay Grunewald and husband Dennis of Wamego, KS; ten grandchildren, Trinity, Trisha, Scott, Michael, Matt, Drew, Hollie, Aaron, Craig, and Katy; four great grandchildren, Corey, Katie, Ava, and Jaxon; one brother, Don Dawson of Russell, Ks; and on sister, Alice Graham of Russell, KS.
Mr. Dawson enjoyed traveling, collecting coins, walking his dog Mollie, and most of all spending time with his family. He enjoyed keeping in touch with family members and friends through email and playing chess online.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wamego, the Elks Club, and the American Legion Post #172. He was also an honorary member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity in which he first pledged in 1949.
Funeral Services will be Tuesday August 14, at 10:00 a.m. at The First United Methodist Church in Wamego. Burial will follow, after a luncheon at the church, in Caney City Cemetery in Caney, Kansas. Mr. Dawson will lie in state at the funeral home starting at 1:00 p.m. Monday. A visitation will be Monday evening at Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego from 6-8:00 p.m. Memorials have been designated in Harry’s name for the American Heart Association or the United Methodist Church of Wamego.
