Claude W. Simpson, 93, of Wamego, KS, passed away in Kansas City, MO. Sunday, February 19, 2012, surrounded by his family.
Born September 21, 1918 in Camden, North Carolina, he was the oldest of three sons of Claude and Sara Simpson. He married Marjorie (Ruby) Huey on January 2, 1946 and enjoyed each other’s company until her passing in October 2007. Claude served in the U.S. Army in WWII, fighting in Europe in the Battle of the Bulge. He was the recipient of three Bronze Stars.
Following his service to his country, Claude and Ruby moved to Wamego in 1951. He worked at Ft. Riley, KS, mostly as a welder, for 40 years until his retirement. He was a past member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church of Wamego and the American Legion Harold Johnson Post 175 of Wamego. He was a very dedicated family man and enjoyed trips and cruises with family, boating, and doing handyman work. The past four years he had resided at New Mark Care Center in Kansas City. He especially enjoyed sitting outdoors and watching birds and could be heard at the Care Center singing in the halls.
Survivors include his son, Sid Simpson (Glenda) of Kansas City, MO; his daughter Claudia Barwick (Jerry) of Haines City, FL; 5 grandchildren, Ryan Simmons (Nichole), Troy Simmons (Ashley), Kevin Simpson, Kent Simpson (Erin) and Danielle Graves; and 5 great-grandchildren, Hunter, Brooke, Alex, Isabel, and Reese. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Marvin and John Simpson.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, February 23, at Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, KS. Burial and military honors will follow in Wamego City Cemetery. He will lie in-state beginning at 12:00 p.m. Thursday with a visitation from 2:00 until time of services.
