Oliver “Doc” Francis Maskil, 87, of Westmoreland, Kansas passed away Monday, February 20, 2012, at the Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan, Kansas.
Doc was born on November 18, 1924 on the family farm outside of Westmoreland. He was the son of John Jacob and Katie (Summerville) Maskil. Doc grew up in Westmoreland attending schools and graduating from Westmoreland High School in 1943. After high school he attended Kansas State University earning a degree in Journalism. On June 24, 1951 Doc married Harriet Elizabeth Hill in Westmoreland, she survives.
Doc worked at and ran the Westmoreland Recorder Newspaper after college for many years until his retirement. He also worked as a Magistrate Judge until retiring in 1994. Doc was a member of the Westmoreland united Methodist Church, the Oregon-California Trails Association (OCTA) and the Rock Creek Historical Society. He was also very involved in the KSU Alumni Association and was a member of the Westmoreland Masonic Lodge. Doc always loved to read and enjoyed traveling and baking. He also loved spending time with his family.
Doc is also survived by his son: Dr. Craig Maskil and wife Lori, of Mt. Vernon, IL; one grandson: Dustin Maskil of Mt. Vernon, IL; one sister: Mae Strifler of Westmoreland and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Debra, a brother Arnold “Peck” Maskil and a sister Lavern Reves.
Funeral services for Doc will be held on Monday, February 27, 2012 at the Westmoreland United Methodist Church. A visitation for Doc will be at 1:00 p.m. at the church followed by the service at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Westmoreland City Cemetery.
