Alfred "Dutch" Bahner

Wamego- Alfred “Dutch” Bahner, 85, passed away Wednesday evening August 29, at Westmoreland Community Care Home. Born on May 18, 1922, in Wamego, he was the son of Joseph and Amanda (Buchmeier) Bahner. He was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Wells Creek. In August of 1942 Dutch enlisted with the United States Marine Corp. He proudly served his country for thirty nine months. Thirty of those months were spent overseas. On September 24, 1947 he married Anna Peddicord. Dutch was a farmer and stockman all of his life. He was a charter member of the VFW Post #1258, as well as a life member of the American Legion. He served as Deacon and secretary of St. John’s Lutheran Church for many years before it closed. He then became a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Manhattan. Dutch was a 4-H community leader and he served on the board of the ASCS office, the Federal Housing Authority Board, Belvue grade school board and USD 320 board. Survivors include: his wife, Anna of the home; his daughter, Kathy Douglas and husband Denny of Wamego; his son Kim Bahner and wife Candy of Belvue; his sister, Alice Rischer of Wamego; his brother, Ben Bahner of Topeka; his four grandchildren, Kacy and Ashley Douglas, Kari Roberts, and Tyson Bahner. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Lester, Carl, Raymond and Howard and one sister, Josephine. Funeral Services will be held Saturday September 1, at 10:30 a.m. at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego with burial and military honors following in Wamego Cemetery. A visitation will be Friday evening at the funeral home from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Mr. Bahner will lie in state Friday at 1:00 p.m. A memorial has been established in Dutch’s name for the Peace Lutheran Church of Manhattan and contributions may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home, P.O. Box 48, Wamego 66547.
