Julia Coen Schmidt

Julia C. Schmidt, 91, of Wamego, Kansas passed away Friday, April 2012, at the Valley Vista Good Samaritan Center in Wamego. Julia was born May 7, 1920, in New York, NY, the daughter of Matthew J. and Mary A. (Creed) Coen. She attended schools in New York, graduating from St. Jean Baptiste High School in 1938. On October 20, 1945, in New York, she was united in marriage to Arthur Frances Schmidt. He preceded her in death in 1992. Julia moved to the Wamego area in 1992 after living in both Fort Riley and Junction City. Julia worked as a clerk in the financial department at Ft. Riley, Kansas for 22 years until her retirement in 1985. She enjoyed being with her grandchildren and family, and also attended Trinity Baptist Church in Wamego for many years. Julia is survived by her two sons: Gerald Schmidt and his wife Judi of Wamego, KS, Arthur F. Schmidt and wife Pam of Cheyenne, Wyoming; a brother, Vincent Coen and wife Margaret of Hendersonville, NC; a sister in-law, Betty Coen of Tempe, AZ; 8 grandchildren: Chris Schmidt (Shana), Stephanie Dockter (Tracy), Stacie Schmidt(fiancée Justin), Ken Schmidt (Estelle), David Schmidt (Lynn), Suzi Schmidt, Kimberly Schmidt and Tim Schmidt; along with 10 great-grandchildren: Tyler, Audrey, Jacob, Anna, Kaydra, Trevin, Blake, Chase, Alec and Quinn. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Jerry and John Coen. Funeral services for Julia will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, with Rev. Dr. Tony Mattia officiating. Burial will be in the Ft. Riley Cemetery. The family will greet friends with a luncheon at Trinity Baptist Church immediately following the funeral service. Memorial contributions may be made to Valley Vista Good Samaritan Center Building Fund, left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, Wamego, KS 66547.
