Ruth Ann (Daylor) Siebert

Ruth Ann (Daylor) Siebert, 84, a lifelong resident of Wamego, died at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas on Thursday, July 19, 2012. Ruth was born in Wamego, Kansas on November 29, 1927. She was the second child of Leo and Irene (Gorges) Daylor. Ruth married Walter Siebert at St. Bernard’s Church in Wamego on May 20, 1952. He preceded her in death. She attended school in Wamego graduating from Wamego High School in 1945. After high school Ruth volunteered with the US Army Nursing Corps and entered medical training at St. Mary’s College in Leavenworth, Kansas. From there she completed her practical training at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, Kansas, graduating in 1948. After graduating from nursing college, Ruth took a trip to Europe with a classmate by ship. She often reminisced about this great adventure. She commented how much sympathy she felt for the people she met in Europe, due to the destruction caused by WWII. Ruth’s great sense of empathy for the suffering of all people was a characteristic that endeared her to the many people she served in the community during her long career as a registered nurse. Ruth also had the distinction of serving as part of the medical team for the US Air Force Atlas Ballistic Missile Base that was located just northwest of Wamego in the early sixties. Ruth was a lover of music and possessed a beautiful singing voice. She won many awards as a vocal soloist in high school. Ruth sang for many weddings and social events in her youth. In her later years her voice was still a thing of beauty, but was solely reserved for the ears of her grandchildren. Ruth was a member of St. Bernard’s Parrish, American Legion Auxiliary, Wamego Historical Society, and many other service organizations. Her friendships were numerous but the friendships she established with a group of women called “The Tuesday Girls” provided a legacy that will live on forever. Ruth and her friends Louise, Joan, Joleen, and Jean, modeled not only what human friendships could be, but should be. These ladies became connected to each other in a way that could only be described as sisters of the same spirit. This friendship provided much needed support for all of these women in times of joy and sorrow. Ruth’s life was exponentially richer because of the “Tuesday Girls”. Ruth’s great capacity for love was deeply rooted in her family, and enjoyed spending time with them sharing stories, laughter and love; she will be dearly missed by all of them. Ruth is survived by her three sons and their wives: Tony and Mary Kaye Siebert of Wamego, KS, Pete and Tess Siebert of Grapevine, TX, and Chris and Sandy Siebert of Wamego KS. Nine grandchildren: Emily (Siebert) Warnes and her husband Will, Lindsey (Siebert) Croley and her husband Darren, Benjamin Siebert, Nicolas Siebert and his wife Emily, Luke Siebert, Daniel Siebert, A.J. Siebert and his wife Natalie, Casey Siebert, and Megan Siebert and 6 great-grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Walter, and two daughters, Teresa and Susan. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church of Wamego with Fr. John Pilcher. Burial will follow at the St. Bernard’s Cemetery. Ruth will lie in-state beginning at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday at the Stewart Funeral Home with family greeting friends during a visitation from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m., followed by a rosary being recited at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Siebert Scholarship Fund with the Wamego Community Foundation and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, PO Box 48, 66547.
