Leta “Elaine” Martinson, 97, of Alma, Kansas passed away Thursday, September 6, 2012 at the Alma Manor, Alma, Kansas.
Elaine was born in Lamar, Colorado on August 10, 1915. She was the daughter of Ernest and Mary Brown. Elaine attended schools and graduated high school in Havensville, Kansas. Elaine married Alfred “Mike” Martinson. He preceded her in death.
After high school Elaine attended nursing school and worked as a nurse in numerous places before settling in Topeka. After retiring she moved to Alma, where she enjoyed babysitting Jenny Yocum Trudo and Brad Yocum and became a beloved part of the Yocum family. While living in Alma she enjoyed crocheting and making quilts and was known as the “quilt lady” as she had made and sold over 900 quilts. She loved to read books and to work outside in her flower garden. In recent years after her husband’s death she resided in Wamego.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Mike, one brother, two sisters, four sons, and one daughter. She is survived by a daughter, Joan Powell, a step-daughter, Marsha Martinson, 8 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and people that loved her.
Cremation has taken affect. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date. A celebration of Elaine’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 16, 2012 at the United Methodist Church in Alma. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Alma Manor or the Wamego Public Library and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, P.O. Box 48, 66547.
