Elmer Henry Piel, 86, died Thursday evening November 22 at Wamego City Hospital.
Born on March 23, 1921, at home on a farm in rural Wabaunsee County, he was the son of Henry W. and Amanda A (Kinsing) Piel. He attended school in District 54 in northern Wabaunsee County. He worked and farmed for his father until 1955 when he joined his brother as a partner until the 1993 flood after which they both retired. He lived on the farm where he was born for 73 years. Elmer and his brother Edward operated Piel Brothers. They bred and raised Hereford cattle and Yorkshire hogs. He was a long time member of the St. Mary’s Farmers Union Business Association Co-op. He was also a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church of McFarland.
He is survived by: his niece, Joanne Piel; his brother-in-law, Arnold Janssen; his sister-in-law, Opal Piel; a host of cousins and several dear friends. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Irma Janssen, and Evelyn Piel, a brother, Edward Piel, and a nephew, Delane Janssen.
Funeral services will be Saturday November 24, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in McFarland with burial following in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. There will be no formal visitation. Memorial contributions may be made in Elmer’s name to McFarland Lutheran Cemetery Fund or The Lutheran Hour Ministries. Contributions may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home, P.O.
