Rose Marie Wahl, 85, of Westmoreland, passed away on January 15, 2008 at Westmoreland Community Care Home.
She was born on July 7, 1922 in Stachy-Sumava, Czechoslovakia, the daughter of Vaclav and Ruza (Wenceslous) Voldrich. Rose attended and graduated from school in Czechoslovakia. In June 1947, at the age of 24, she came to the United States on the Queen Elizabeth Ocean Liner. After docking in New York, Rose then traveled to Westmoreland to live with William and Marie Wahl on their family farm. On August 9, 1947, she married Carrol L. Wahl in Westmoreland. The couple met when Carrol had been wounded in the war and had stayed at her family's home to recover. He preceded her in death on January 27, 2001, after 53 years of marriage,
Rose was a member of the United Methodist Church of Westmoreland, a member of the UMC Women, and a member of the church choir since 1948. She also had memberships at Rock Creek Extension Homemaker’s Unit, she was past president and on the board of directors of the Rock Creek Historical Society for 18 years, served as chairperson of the Pottawatomie County Heart Association and also volunteered at Westmoreland Community Care Home where she entertained residents there for many years. She worked later in life as a clerk at the Westmoreland Hy-Klas store for ten years. Rose also worked at the Westmoreland Branch of the Pottawatomie and Wabaunsee County Library from 1972-2002. She loved to sing, cook, raise and arrange flowers and spend time with her three grandsons.
Rose is survived by: her son, Larry Wahl and wife Cindy of Wheaton, KS; her brother, Rudy Voldrich and wife Maria of Wamego, KS; her three grandsons, Mike, Brandon, and Chris Wahl, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband she was also preceded in death by three infant daughters, Carren, Kim, and Linda, her sister, Anastazia, and two brothers, Frank and Vaclav.
Funeral Services for Rose will be Wednesday January 23, at 10:30 a.m., at Westmoreland United Methodist Church with burial following in Westmoreland City Cemetery. She will lie in state on Tuesday January 22 at 1:00 p.m., at Stewart Funeral Chapel in Westmoreland with visitation being held there from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Memorials have been established in Rose’s name for Rock Creek Valley Historical Society or Westmoreland United Methodist Church.
