John Bernard Uhlrich

John B. Uhlrich, 84, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away Saturday, March, 23, 2013 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas. John was born September 17, 1928 in Wamego, Kansas the son of John and Grace (Sullivan) Uhlrich. He attended school in Wamego graduating from Wamego High School in 1946. After high school John attended Kansas State University graduating in 1954 with a degree in Business. In between high school and his college graduation, John enlisted into the United States Marine Corp where he served as a Sergeant during the Korean Conflict. After Kansas State University he went to work for 4 years at General Motors as a finance insurance agent. In 1958 John bought Uhlrich Chevrolet in Horton, Kansas. After working for 16 years in Horton he sold his dealership and moved back to Wamego in 1974 and started his own auto leasing company which he ran until his retirement. On July 20, 1957 John married Alberta “Bert” M. Moritz in Beloit, Kansas. She survives of the home. John was big into the Kansas State University Alumni Association. He was an avid K-State sports fan and enjoyed attending all K-State sporting events. John also loved to golf, but most importantly loved spending time with his family. John was a member of the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, he was a 4th degree Knight and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council # 1370, he was president of the Horton Chamber of Commerce, the first president of the Horton Hospital Board, a member of the president's club at Kansas State University, a fraternity member of Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity at Kansas State University and was on the St. Bernard’s Building Fund Committee for over 10 years. Survivors also include his daughter: Beth Ann Uhlrich, of Manhattan, Kansas; two sons: Mark Uhlrich and wife Kristin of Las Vegas, Nevada and Jay Uhlrich and wife Lori of Topeka, Kansas and three grandchildren: Rylee, Lauren and Luke. He was preceded in death by his daughter: Jeanne McKenzie on February 13, 2013 and one sister: Margaret “Peggy” McMaster. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church of Wamego. Burial will follow in the St. Bernard’s Cemetery. John will lie in-state Tuesday beginning at 1:00 p.m. with a Rosary being recited at 6:00 p.m. followed by a visitation until 7:30 p.m. all at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church Choir and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, PO Box 48, 66547.
