Edward "Ed" Carl Dekat

Edward “Ed” Carl Dekat, 60, of St. Marys, Kansas passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at Midland Care Hospice in Topeka, Kansas. Ed was born December 11, 1952 in Wamego, Kansas the son of Gilbert A. and Marcella M. (Sommers) Dekat. Ed attended Flush Grade School before graduating from Westmoreland High School in 1971. After high school Ed joined the United States Air Force where he served until 1976 before returning home. After the Air Force he attended Emporia State University where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration. In 1984 Ed married Dolores Scheier they later divorced in 1998. Ed worked for Westar Energy for 33 years at the Jeffery Energy Center. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time outdoors. He was a dedicated and hardworking man who was very kindhearted and family oriented. Ed was a past member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of St. Marys and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union. Ed is survived by a daughter: Michelle Johnson and husband Nick of Topeka, KS; his son Bryce Dekat of Kansas City, KS; two sisters: Peggy Lockhart and husband Jim of Topeka, KS and Julie Schubert and husband Ron of Erie, CO; three brothers: Terry Dekat and wife Krystal of Manhattan, KS, Daniel Dekat and wife Becky of Manhattan, KS and Christopher Dekat and wife Karen of St. George, KS; one grandson: Gavin Johnson and several aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services for Ed will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. Cremation will take place following his services. Private inurnment will be held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery at a later date. Ed will lie in-state beginning at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday with a visitation being held from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. all at the Stewart Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Ed Dekat Memorial Fund, to be designated later, and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, Wamego, 66547.
