Cecilia Umscheid

Cecilia Umscheid, 80, of Wamego, KS, passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House of Manhattan. She was born April 3, 1933 in Topeka, KS, the daughter of Philip A. and Mary Ann (Puhl) Habig. On October 22, 1955, Cecilia was married to Mark George Umscheid at Sacred Heart Church in Topeka. They lived and worked together on their farm near Flush, KS for 48 years, and moved to Wamego in 2003. Mark preceded her in death in 2004. Cecilia worked on the farm, able to do almost anything needed to be done. She also managed the Flush General Store for several years, and also worked at KSU Housing for several years. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, St. Joseph’s Alter Society, and also St. Bernard’s Catholic Church of Wamego. She was also a past member of the Manhattan American Legion and the Legion Auxiliary. Cecilia was an avid KSU sports fan, enjoyed playing bingo, and attending the grandkids ballgames and family events. She is survived by one son, Rick Umscheid, Wamego; four daughters, Mary Bickford (Randy), Topeka, Patty Simmons (Dennis) and Marlene “Molly” Schmidt (John), all of Wamego, Darlene “Dolly” Glover, Topeka; four brothers, Vince Habig (Laura), Frank Habig, Chuck Habig (Cheryl), all of Topeka, Joe Habig (Wanda), of Oklahoma; three sisters, Lori Bayless (John), Burlingame, KS, Kathy Elersic (Don), and Dolly Habig, all of Topeka; eight grandchildren, Ashley Schmidt (Adam) and Bryan Bickford, James Simmons, Dylan and Dallas Glover, Trey, Brett, and Kaley Schmidt. She was also preceded in death by two brothers: Philip Habig, Jr. and Jerome Habig; and four sisters: Mary and Theresa Schiffelbein, Millie Plemons and Marti Shanley. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 3, 2013, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Flush. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Cecilia will lie in-state beginning at 1:00p.m., Sunday at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego where a visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary recited at 7:30 p.m. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, or Good Shepherd Hospice House and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, Wamego, KS 66547.
