Francis "Gene" Eugene Shepherd

Francis Eugene “Gene” Shepherd, 68, of Belvue, Kansas passed away Thursday, June 6, 2013 at the Indian Meadows Nursing Center, in Overland Park, Kansas. Gene was born February 27, 1945 on the family farm in rural Onaga, Kansas. He was the son of Ernest Paul and Mary Belle (Teter) Shepherd. He attended schools in Onaga and Havensville, Kansas before being drafted into the United States Army at Ft. Leonardwood, Missouri in August 1965. While in the Army, Gene served 17 months in the Vietnam War before his honorable discharge at Ft. Lewis, Washington in December 1967. After the military Gene returned home to the Havensville and Belvue area. On May 12, 1980 in Medicine Bow, Wyoming, Gene married Kay E. Woehr. She preceded him in death. Gene worked as an equipment operator for various outfits before his retirement. He enjoyed going hunting and fishing and working on cars. He is survived by one son: Randy Evans of Topeka, Kansas; two daughters: Kandi Bullock and husband Duane of Louisville, Kansas and Sandi Cummings of Belvue, Kansas; one brother: Gale Shepherd of Wamego, Kansas; one sister: Arlene Shepherd of Oskaloosa, Kansas; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Among his wife Kay, he was also preceded in death by his parents and three sisters: Patty, Mildred and Mary Jo. Funeral services for Gene will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. Cremation will take place following services. A visitation will be held prior to his service beginning at 9:00a.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Francis Eugene “Gene” Shepherd Memorial Fund and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, 66547, Wamego, KS.
