Ella May Howard, a longtime resident of St. George, KS, and a current resident of the Westmoreland Community Care Home, passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2013.
Ella May was born January 31, 1919 on the family farm in Geary County, KS, the daughter of Robert E. and Sarah Charlotte (Crider) O’Neill. She graduated from St. George High School in 1936. She then married Frank Howard in Westmoreland, KS on her birthday, January 31, 1937. Frank preceded her in death in 2002.
Ella May was very active in the St. George community. She served as the St. George Postmistress of the USPS for 30 years until her retirement from that position. She was a member of the St. George United Methodist Church, the Home Demonstration Unit, and also the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed going to dances, doing needlework and ceramics, and her collectibles.
Survivors include: one daughter, Loretta May Bosse and her husband Orlin, of Wheaton, KS; three brothers: Robert O’Neill, Randolph, KS, Lee O’Neill and Frank O’Neill, both of Manhattan, KS; two grandchildren: Dixie Revell and husband James, of Wheaton, KS, Kathy Shobe and husband Chad, of Oskaloosa, KS; and four great-grandchildren: Ellen, Maggie, Clancy and Michaela. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rosella Kay Howard in 1941, and two sisters: Violet and Mary.
A celebration of Ella May’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 9th at Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. Burial will follow in the Wamego City Cemetery. Mrs. Howard will lie in-state at the funeral home beginning at 1:00 p.m. Monday, where the family will greet friends during a visitation from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. George U.M.C., or to the Westy Community Care Home and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, P.O.
