Doug W. Martin, 46, passed away at Stormont Vail in Topeka April 21, 2008.
Born on June 10, 1961 in Hutchinson, Kansas, he was the son of Kenneth and Evelyn (Weishaar) Martin. He attended and graduated from Hutchinson High School. On November 24, 1994, he married Diane E. Smith in Connersville, Indiana. He was employed with Kansas Gas Service for over 25 years before retiring.
Doug was a past member of the Mill Creek Baptist Church and a current member of the Town and Country Christian Church in Topeka. He taught Sunday school classes and also ministered to the Topeka Correctional Facility on Sundays. Doug was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 304. He also volunteered for numerous organizations including, Wabaunsee and Flint Hills Christian School Booster Clubs, Wamego Historical Society, Alma grade school, and had been volunteering with Stormont Vail for the last year. He was very active in Relay for Life Wabaunsee Chapter. Doug had battled cancer for the last three years.
He is survived by: his wife, Diane of McFarland, KS; his step mother, Patricia Martin of Hutchinson, KS; his son, Kyle Smith of Santa Cruz, CA; his daughters, Tracy Clay and her husband Lucas of Topeka, KS, Heather Martin-Murphy and husband Josh of Manhattan, KS, Rebecca Martin of Wamego, KS, and Stacy Smith of Yosemite, CA; his brothers, Ken Martin and wife Mary of Lenexa, KS, Chris of Hutchinson, KS, and Sean Martin and wife Beverly of Lenexa, KS; his sisters, Debra Dalke and husband Don of Wichita, KS, and Karen Staib of Hutchinson, KS; and his three grandchildren, Aidyn, Zoey and Myles Clay of Topeka, KS; Doug was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law Rocky Staib.
Funeral Services will be Thursday April 24 at 10:30 a.m. at Town and Country Christian Church in Topeka, Kansas with burial following in McFarland Cemetery. Doug will lie in state at Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego on Wednesday April 23, starting at 1:00 p.m. and the family will greet friends at a visitation from 6:00-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial has been established in Doug’s name for the Gideon’s International and contributions may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home, P.O. Box 48, Wamego, 66547.
