Velma Irene Asbury, 92, of Wamego, Kansas passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at Midland Care Hospice in Topeka, Kansas.
Velma was born October 7, 1920, in Easton, Kansas, the daughter of Chester and Leila (Potter) Meredith. She attended schools in St. Marys, graduating from St. Marys High School. On her 20th birthday on October 7, 1940, she was united in marriage to Thomas “Buck” Asbury in Leavenworth, Kansas. He preceded her in death. Velma worked as a hairdresser, before becoming a stay at home mother. She was a member of Eastern Star and the Wamego United Methodist Church.
Velma is survived by her daughter: Sue Bowdre and husband Rick of Kansas City, Kansas, her son: Terry Asbury and wife Vicki of Topeka, Kansas; 10 grandchildren plus 3 in-law grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her son, Tom Asbury, one sister: Lucille Johnson and one brother: Clifford Meredith.
A private family burial for Velma was held at the Wamego City Cemetery. A celebration of Velma’s life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Care Hospice, Topeka, left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, Wamego, KS 66547.
