Gregory "Greg" Lynn Kern

Gregory “Greg” Lynn Kern, 61, of rural Maple Hill, Kansas, passed away Friday, September 27, 2013 at his home. He was born December 6, 1951 in Smith Center, Kansas, the son of Lawrence E. and Gertrude E. (Myers) Kern. He grew up in Smith Center graduating from Smith Center High School in 1970. After high school Greg attended Kansas State University receiving a degree in Mechanical Engineering. On February 7, 1987 in Naperville, Illinois he was united in marriage to Lori Ann Calzavara. She survives of the home. After college, Greg worked 25 years at Commonwealth Edison in Chicago, Illinois. He then worked three years at Phillips Getchow as the Vice President of Operations. His last employer was Day & Zimmermann, NPS first as Director of Operations and later as the Vice President of Operations. In December, 2011, he retired and moved to the Wamego area to be closer to family. Greg was an avid golfer and singer. He particularly enjoyed singing with his siblings in the family quartet. Among many other hobbies were riding motorcycles, working on his farm and re-habilitating houses. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wamego. Greg is also survived by his two sons: Cody Calzavara of Round Lake Beach, Illinois and Joshua Kern and wife Dorothy of Jerome, Idaho; two daughters: Shana Calzavara of Kenosha, Wisconsin and Rebecca Heckinger and husband Phillip of Woodinville, Washington; two brothers: Douglas Kern and wife Carolyn of Denton, Texas and Bill Kern and wife Vickie of Wamego, KS; sister: Donna Tibbets and husband Emmit of Berryton, KS; five grandchildren: Drake, Brie, Evyn, Ruth and Amy and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services for Greg will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 4, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church, Wamego. Burial will follow in the Wamego City Cemetery. Greg will lie in-state beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, where family will greet friends during a visitation from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. all at the Stewart Funeral Home, Wamego. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Lawrence & Gertrude Kern Family Ag Scholarship Fund, in care of Kansas State University, 2323 Anderson Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502.
