Olive Joy Simmons, 88, of Wamego, Kansas, formerly of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at the Valley Vista Good Samaritan Society in Wamego.
Olive was born on September 18, 1925 in Bozeman, Montana, the daughter of Samual and Margaret (Conwell) Campbell. She graduated high school in 1943 from Keats High School, before moving to Manhattan. Olive lived all of her adult life in Manhattan, before moving to Wamego in 2009 to be closer to her son Dennis. On August 20, 1944 in Manhattan, Olive was united in marriage to Chester D. Simmons. He preceded her in death in 1986.
Olive was a homemaker. She enjoyed golfing, square dancing, doing yard work, spending time with her grandkids and traveling in her later years. She was a member of the Stagg Hill Golf Course and the Manhattan First United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her son: Dennis Simmons and wife Patricia, of Wamego, KS; two brothers: Sammy Campbell and wife Donna of Manhattan, KS and Keith Campbell of Colorado Springs, CO; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by one son: Gary Simmons; two sisters: Doris McGrath and Adele Hogan and one brother: Loren Campbell.
Olive’s wishes were to be cremated. A graveside memorial service will be held at the Valley View Memorial Gardens in Manhattan, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, Kansas, PO Box 48, 66547.
