Leanne (Schmidt) Leonard

LeAnne (Schmidt) Leonard, 76, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away Thursday, December 5, 2013 at the Wamego Health Center. LeAnne was born on August 13, 1937, in Adams County, Nebraska on the family farm near Hastings, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Carl H. and Lena M. (Schultz) Schmidt. She attended school in Hastings, graduating from Hastings High School in 1955. On February 27, 1971, LeAnne was united in marriage to Edward Joseph Leonard. He preceded her in death in 2010. She had 4 children from a previous marriage and gained 3 step-children from her marriage to Edward. After high school LeAnne worked as a switchboard operator in Hastings. Upon moving to Wamego, she worked as a cook at the Wamego Health Center and was the Librarian for many years at the Wamego Public Library. She was a member of the Friends of the Library, VFW Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary, where she held many roles. She was a member of the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church of Wamego and delivered Meals on Wheels for several years as a volunteer, with husband Edward. She loved arts and crafts, producing many creative projects over the years with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid gardener and cook, and was a caregiver to many, including her mother Lena who LeAnne visited on a near daily basis for many years at Valley Vista in Wamego. LeAnne is survived by her daughters: Kim Doucet and husband Mitchell of Rossville, KS and Keri Longaway and husband Adam of St. Louis, MO; two stepsons: Wayne Leonard of Chicago, IL and Dale Leonard of Manhattan, KS; one step-daughter: Tina Leonard of Manhattan, KS; 5 grandchildren: Chris, Cheryl, Cory, Sarah and Chelsea; 2 step-grandchildren: Chelsie and Shara Briane; and 5 great-grandchildren: MaKenzie, MaKaden, Angie, Aiden and Sabrina. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brother: David, son: Keith, daughter, Karla and son in-law: Kurt. Mass of Christian Burial for LeAnne will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 13 at the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church of Wamego. Burial will follow at the Wamego City Cemetery. A visitation will be held prior to her mass beginning at 9:00 a.m., followed by a Rosary being recited at 10:00 a.m. Flowers or memorial contributions to Community Health Ministry, the Pottawatomie County Caring Hearts Humane Society or the Wamego Community Foundation/WAVM Donation may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, Wamego, KS, 66547.
