Henry Clay Sprague, 86, of Wamego, Kansas, formerly of the Eskridge community passed away Thursday, January 16, 2014 at the Valley Vista Good Samaritan Society in Wamego.
Henry was born September 25, 1927, in Chalk, Kansas, the son of Claude and Mabel (Duling) Sprague. When Henry was just six months old he was diagnosed with infantile paralysis and sleeping sickness. Henry lived at home with his folks helping on the family farm until their passing in 1960, before moving in with his uncle Paul Duling until 1969. Henry then was taken in by the Pageler family, where he lived until his passing. Henry attended the New Life Baptist Church in Wamego and enjoyed gardening and was a dog lover.
Henry is survived by his longtime caregiver and friend, LaVern Pageler and her daughter, Diane Eckstein, both of Wamego; his two sisters: Mildred Jaquith and Vera Brunhs, both of Topeka, KS; eight nieces and nephews: Grant, Tom, Sandra, Vickie, Ronnie, Randy, Starla and Shayla and numerous great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Donald and Ralph.
A memorial service for Henry will be held Monday, January 20, 2014 at 10:30 a.m., at the New Life Baptist Church, Wamego. A private inurnment will be held at a later date at the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Life Baptist Church and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, Wamego, KS 66547.
