Doris May Hand

Doris May Hand, 81, lost her nine year battle with cancer Wednesday July 9, 2008 at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka. She was born August 31, 1926 in Baltimore, Maryland the daughter of George T. and Elizabeth (VanGorder) Meddleton. She attended schools in Baltimore and soon after married Kenneth Taylor. To this union, two children were born, Kenneth Jr. and Doris. The couple later divorced. She then married Robert Hand and the couple added another daughter to their family, Roberta. They later divorced. Doris worked for the Department of the Army as a Chief Switchboard Operator in Ft. Hamilton New York for eleven years. She earned her real estate license after moving to Florida and sold real estate there for several years. She then moved to North Carolina and sold real estate until her retirement. Doris had lived in Westmoreland for the last two years to be closer to her daughter. She is survived by: her daughters, Doris Poteet and her husband Victor of Westmoreland, KS, and Roberta Babson of Wilmington, NC; her son, Kenneth G. Taylor Jr. and his wife, Kathy of Virginia Beach, VA; her eleven grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; Doris was preceded in death by her brother George Meddleton Jr. and her sister Elizabeth Jenkins. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials made in Doris’ name to the American Cancer Society or Zimmer Cancer Center of Wilmington North Carolina.
