James C. Sunnenberg, 84, of St. George, KS, passed away at his home Sunday, March 9, 2014, following his battle with cancer.
He was born October 14, 1929 in Axtell, KS, the son of James Hurley and Annie Sunnenberg. He grew up in Axtell and attended schools there. Jim married Margaret Raub on November 29, 1949 in Marysville, KS. She survives of the home.
Jim worked in the construction business his entire career, starting in Nebraska and then moving to the St. George area in 1961. He worked for 40 years at Walters & Morgan Construction Company of Manhattan as a construction site superintendent until his retirement. Jim helped build many water treatment plants throughout Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma. Outside of his job, he enjoyed playing billiards, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his kids and grandkids.
He is also survived by four sons: James B. Sunnenberg and his wife Donna, of Sanger, TX, Leo Sunnenberg and David Sunnenberg, both of St. George, KS, Dennis Sunnenberg and his wife Melinda, of Manhattan, KS; 9 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2014, at Seven Dolors Catholic Church of Manhattan. Mr. Sunnenberg will lie in-state beginning at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, where the family will greet friends during visitation from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, 66547.
