Margaret Irene (Shideler) Niedfeldt

Margaret I. Niedfeldt, 90, of Wamego, Kansas passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.   Margaret was born August 30, 1923 in rural McCune, Kansas, the daughter of Floyd Quinter and Hazel Mae (Hartman) Shideler. She attended Cherokee County schools and graduated high school in 1940. She was united in marriage to Walter F. Niedfeldt in the Wells Creek Church, Belvue, Kansas, on May 23, 1954 by Rev. A. Vernon Kurz. They made their home on Walter’s family farm near Paxico, Kansas. Walter preceded Margaret in death on August 14, 1983. Margaret remained on the farm until March 2001 when she moved to Wamego.   Margaret was a member of the Wells Creek Church Dorcas Circle and was active in Sunday School and other areas of the church.She also served on the Kaw Township election board several times.   In her youth, she was a member of the Monmouth 4-H Club in Crawford County, Kansas. She won ribbons for her baking, canning, and sewing skills and numerous honors as a member of the County Home Economics Judging team at the Hutchinson State Fair. She was a secretary-bookkeeper for a number of years in Columbus, Kansas. She later moved to Topeka where she attended Clarks Business School and was employed with the State Highway Commission.   Margaret was a devoted farm wife and mother. She enjoyed life in the country and looked forward every spring to raising chickens and a garden. She milked cows and helped in the field when needed. She shared her love of music with her daughters and taught them how to sew, cook, and be hard workers.   She is survived by two daughters: Beverly Hargrave (Willie), Chillicothe, Missouri, Tresa Landis (Fred), Manhattan, Kansas; two grandchildren: Shelby and Colton Hargrave, both of Chillicothe, Missouri; three sisters: Florence Worland, Topeka, Kansas, Pauline Morris, Niles, Ohio, Frances (Dean) Perkins, Sunnyvale, California; one brother: Harold J. Shideler (Joanne), McCune, Kansas; one sister-in-law: Mary E. Niedfeldt, Wamego; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by one brother Charles Shideler; two sisters, Dorothy Porubsky and Edith Crispino.   Mrs. Niedfeldt will lie in state at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, beginning at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 19, where the family will receive friends during a visitation from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 20, 2014 at the Wells Creek Immanuel Faith Community Church, Belvue, with Pastor Matt Zodrow officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Wells Creek Immanuel Faith Community Church or the Good Shepherd Hospice House and left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home, P.O. Box 48, Wamego, KS 66547.
