Lawrence (Larry) E. Eckart

Lawrence (Larry) E. Eckart, 75, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014 at the Wamego Health Center. Larry was born March 20, 1939, in Wamego, the son of Albert J. and Marie C. (Ebert) Eckart. He grew up and attended schools in Wamego, graduating from Wamego High School in 1957, before joining the United States Army Reserves. Larry served in the Reserves for six years before his discharge. On July 7, 1962, in Wamego, Larry was united in marriage to Glenda A. Motes. She survives of the home, which Larry built. On top of being in the Army Reserves, Larry worked fulltime as a carpenter and doing dry wall. He then went to work for Goodyear Tire in Topeka for 13 years, but continued to work part-time as a carpenter. Larry later became the manager and operator of Rural Water District #1, Pottawatomie County for over 20 years, where he won operator manager of the year in the state of Kansas in 1988. He finished his career working for Larson Construction, before retiring due to his health. Larry was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed reading Louis L’Amour western novels and loved going hunting and dancing. He was a member of the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church of Wamego, Blackjack American Legion and also served on the Pottawatomie County Zoning Board. Larry is also survived by his two sons: Gregory A. Eckart and wife Ginger and Curtis A. Eckart and wife Brenda all of Wamego, KS; one sister: Margie Bellinder of Wamego, KS; two step-grandchildren: Blythe and Austin Wagner; two sister in-laws: Patsy Eckart of Wamego, KS and Barbara Eckart of Colorado Springs, CO and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Joseph and Delbert Eckart and one sister, Rita Carson. Larry’s wishes were to be cremated. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. Inurnment will follow at St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Wamego. A Rosary will be recited at 9:00 a.m., where a visitation will follow until service time. Memorials may be made to the Wamego Public Library or the St. Bernard’s Cemetery Fund and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, Wamego, KS 66547.
