Harold Gene Etienne, 77, a lifetime resident of Wamego, KS, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Stormont-Vail Health Care in Topeka.
Harold was born August 13, 1936 in St. George, KS, the son of Howard L. and Mabele L. (Cox) Etienne. He attended St. George schools and graduated from St. George High in 1954. He began working at Steel & Pipe as a truck driver, mechanic, and eventually a dispatcher until 1975. He then served as a Pottawatomie County Deputy Sheriff for 20 years, followed by serving as the Director of Emergency Management for 5 years until his retirement. During that time, he was also responsible for training EMS and Fire Department personnel proper use of rescue equipment and techniques. Harold married Lorna Jane Lyon on January 4, 1956. She survives of their home.
He was a 25 year member of Wamego Masonic Lodge #75 AF&AM, serving the lodge in many official positions. He was also a member and served on the board of directors of the Wamego Historical Society for many years. He was an original member of the Wamego Area Chrysler Enthusiast Car Club, and enjoyed restoring and working on antique cars and attending shows.
He is survived by his wife, Lorna of Wamego; two sons: Randy Etienne, and Rodney Etienne (Kendra), all of Wamego; two brothers: Gary Etienne (Barbara), and John Etienne (Dorothy), all of Wamego; one sister: Marilyn Frame of Tucson, AZ; one sister-in-law: Barbara Etienne of Wamego; 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Bobbie Dean Etienne.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 27th at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. Burial will follow in the Wamego City Cemetery. A visitation will be held Monday, May 26th from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Wamego Historical Society and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, PO Box 48, 66547.
