Joyce Brummett, 73, a long time resident of Wamego, KS passed away May 26, 2014 at her daughter’s home near Alma. Joyce was born December 21, 1940 in West Frankfort, IL, the daughter of Carroll Ray and Clara Evelyn Willis Clem. She graduated from Thompsonville High School in 1957 and then attended Southern Illinois University for one year. In July of 1958, she married Jerry Dean Brummett in Hurst, IL. Joyce and Jerry later divorced. Joyce raised her children and was a homemaker until obtaining her real estate license and selling real estate in Wamego and Topeka during the early 1980’s. She moved to Lawrence and worked as a secretary in the University of Kansas Athletics Department from 1987 until retiring in 1994. Following her retirement, Joyce moved to Hanover, KS to be closer to family. She enjoyed attending church, loved having pets, vegetable and flower gardening, sharing time with her friends over a cup of coffee, and telling a good story to her grandkids. Joyce always stayed in close touch her family and cherished the times she had with them. Survivors include: three sons, Brian Brummett (Sara), Westmoreland, KS, Kelly Brummett (Jeannette), Kansas City, KS, Pat Brummett, Wamego; two daughters, Lisa Burgess, Colorado Springs, CO, Amy Capoun (Glen), Alma, KS; two brothers, Bill (Diana) Clem and Neal (Sharon) Clem, of West Frankfort, IL; three sisters, Shirley Stringer, Marion , IL, Sharon Mabry, Ridgeland, MS, Susan Guerra (Joe), Ballwin, MO; 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons: Larry and Jon Brummett, and one grandson. Funeral services for Joyce will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 4th at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. Burial will follow in the Wamego City Cemetery. A visitation will be held Tuesday, June 3rd from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home, where she will lie-in-state beginning at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Pottawatomie County Caring Hearts Humane Society, and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, PO Box 48, 66547.
