Fred Harrison Barnhart, Sr.

Fred Harrison Barnhart, Sr., 90, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2014 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas. Fred was born on August 26, 1923 in Horseheads, New York the son of Harrison and Arrah (James) Barnhart. Fred enlisted into the United States Army in 1942, where he was in Patton’s 35th Division, 134th Infantry Regiment earning 3 major campaign ribbons The Ardennes, Northern France and Rhineland including the Battle of the Bulge, before his honorable discharge in 1945. His decorations include the American Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge. After the military Fred returned home to New York. On December 7, 1946 in Athens, Pennsylvania, Fred was united in marriage to Lorraine Sjostrom. She survives of the home. Fred worked as a brick mason in the construction field for 30 years before retiring in 1976. After his retirement he and Lorraine enjoyed traveling. Fred and Lorraine lived in Waverly, New York for over 50 years, before moving to Concord, North Carolina in 1999 and eventually moving to Wamego in 2005 to be closer to their son Mike. Fred loved to tinker and enjoyed going to auctions, he could fix anything he put his mind to. Fred enjoyed hunting and fishing and also enjoyed playing Bingo. Fred was a life member of the D.A.V. and a life member of the American Legion. Fred is also survived by his three sons: Fred Barnhart, Jr. and wife Mary of Syracuse, New York, Jeff Barnhart of Raleigh, North Carolina and Mike Barnhart and wife Cindy of Wamego; one daughter: Arrah Kepner of Concord, North Carolina; his canine buddy: Ozzy; one sister: Susie Richards and husband Ray of Waverly, New York; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Leona and two brothers: Chuck and Ernie. Funeral services for Fred will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 3, 2014 at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. Burial will follow at the Wamego City Cemetery with full military honors. A visitation for Fred will be held prior to his service beginning at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Good Shepherd Hospice House and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, 66547, Wamego, KS.
