Geraldine “Jerry” Ebert, 88, of rural Flush, Kansas, passed away at home on the family farm, Monday evening, December 1st, 2014, while attended by family. Geraldine “Jerry” suffered a long series of illnesses that had left her confined to a wheelchair.
“Jerry” was born of parents Meinrad and Loretta (Riat) Dekat November 4th, 1926 in Pottawatomie County near Flush Kansas. She was the second of seven children. Jerry grew up on the family farm and graduated from Flush High School in 1944 where she had been a pianist in the school band. After high school she did farm chores and helped raise younger siblings, all the while being courted by high school sweetheart Clyde Ebert. Jerry and Clyde were married October 5th, 1948 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Flush. They began a lifetime of farming near Flush and raised six children there.
A lifelong member of St. Joseph’s parish, Jerry was a member of the church Altar Society serving as co-chairman for one term, and for a period of time was the church organist, and played piano in Bill Heptig’s orchestra. Jerry was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary tending bar on occasion, and worked for one year as a cook at Wamego High School. She enjoyed embroidery, playing cards, baking many pies for the annual Flush picnic each year, canning goods from her garden, traveling, and especially time shared with her family.
Jerry is survived by her husband Clyde Joseph Ebert, of the home; three daughters: Nancy Leiker (Curtis), Wamego, KS, Patricia Chrest, Wamego, KS, Pamela Bennett, Topeka, KS; two sons: Daniel Ebert, Wamego, KS, and Todd Ebert (Janet), Wamego, KS; one daughter in-law, Cynthia Ebert, Wamego, KS; five sisters: Jean Lauer, Wamego, KS, Mary Dolores Schlegel, Manhattan, KS, Dorothy Umscheid, Wamego, KS, Alice Marten (Bob), St. George, KS, and Ruth Walsh (Ron), Wamego, KS; 20 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Delbert Louis Dekat, and her son Dale Anthony Ebert.
Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Ebert will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 6, 2014, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Flush, KS. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Jerry will lie in-state beginning at 1:00 p.m., Friday, December 5th at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, where a Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. with family greeting friends during visitation following the Rosary until 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, or to Community Health Ministries, and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, PO Box 48, 66547.
