Marvin E. Oppenlander, 79, of St. George, Kansas, passed away Thursday, December 4, 2014 at the Good Shepherd Hospice of Manhattan.
Marvin was born January 18, 1935 in Manhattan, KS, the son of Harry E. and Gladys L. Mann Oppenlander. He attended schools in St. George, KS and graduated there in 1953. Following school, he joined the Kansas National Guard, serving for 6 years, while at the same time, he began his working career in construction. Marvin was united in marriage to Judith “Judy” L. Bohn in Wamego Kansas on October 20 1956.
He worked at Manhattan Country Club and Wamego Country Club as the greens keeper and golf course maintenance for many years, and then in construction at Jeffrey Energy Center until his retirement. He was a longtime member of Carpenters Union Local #918 of Manhattan. Marvin enjoyed the outdoors, going fishing and hunting, working in his yard, and being with his family. He was very handy and there was hardly ever anything that he could not fix or construct. He had a good sense of humor and enjoyed joking with his friends.
Survivors include: his wife Judy of the home; two daughters: Teresa Geer (Mike) of Mulvane, KS and Ruth Nihart (Tom) of Wamego; one sister, Sharon Sherwood (Ray) of Manhattan; four brothers: Jim Clark of Wamego, Tom Clark, Long Beach, CA, Lee Clark (Sue) of St. George, Lyle Oppenlander of Manhattan; four grandchildren: Michael (Kim), Kristina, Rachel, Hanna, and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both sets of parents and one brother, Danny Clark.
Funeral services for Marvin will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014 at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. Burial will follow at the St. George Cemetery. He will lie in-state beginning at 1:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with family greeting friends during a visitation from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Good Shepherd Hospice House and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, 66547, Wamego, KS
