David Franklin Burgess

April 3, 1945 — December 28, 2008

Wamego- David F. Burgess, 63, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away Sunday, December 29, 2008 while visiting relatives in Georgia. Born on April 3, 1945 in Westmoreland, Kansas, he was the son of Alfred and Dorothy (Bowman) Burgess. He attended and graduated from Wamego High School in 1963. David proudly served his country with the United States Air Force for four years. On June 13, 1965 he married Sharon Kufahl. She preceded him in death on June 3, 1979. He later married Tommie Sue Pitman “Susan” on April 12, 1980 in Pensacola, Florida. She survives of the home. David farmed the family farm in Wamego and also worked with KDOT. He retired as supervisor at KDOT after 39 years of service. He was always there to offer help to family, friends and neighbors with their harvesting and farming. David was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Wamego and also was a member of the Black Jack Saddle Club. He is survived by: his wife, Susan of the home; his daughters Kristy Lynn Umscheid and her husband Russell of Flush, KS, Sherry Ann Seufert of Wamego, KS, Susan Melissa Stitt and her husband Randy of Manhattan, KS, Angelina Jo Basham of Lincoln, NE, Christina Sue Gamino and her husband Chad of Wamego, KS, and Liane Elizabeth Butler and her husband Curt of Wamego, KS; his sister Ruth Archimede of Omaha, NE; his fifteen grandchildren, Adam Umscheid and his wife Megan, Bryant, Tyler, Macy, and McKenzy Umscheid, Andrew, Samuel and Allison Seufert, Payton Goans and Ainsley Stitt, Anthony, Tierra and Ariston Gamino and Jasmine and Jaden Butler; and his numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday January 2nd, 2009 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Wamego, Kansas with burial following in Wamego Cemetery. David will lie in state at the funeral home starting at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday January 1, 2009 with visitation held from 6:30-8:00 p.m. that evening. Memorials have been designated to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and contributions may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home, P.O. Box 48, Wamego, 66547.
