Victor Leroy Fechter

June 17, 1924 — April 23, 2015

Victor Leroy Fechter, 90, of Manhattan, Kansas went to our Lord, Jesus Christ, on April 23, 2015, at 8 pm. He died at home in Topeka with his family by his side. Victor was born on June 17, 1924 on a farm near Wamego, Kansas. Victor was the middle child in a family of 6. He graduated from St. George High School in 1942. Victor married Betty Jean Smith at St. Bernard’s Parish in 1949. Victor was a well-known businessman in downtown Manhattan and owned “Vic’s 66 Service Station” from 1960-2000. Victor and Betty were also active at the Manhattan Country Club for many years. Victor also enjoyed the companionship of his friends at the Eagles and Elks. He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Fechter, and brothers, Larry, Dean, and Vincent Fechter of Wamego. Other survivors include his two sons, Michael Fechter of Topeka and Mickey Fechter of Wamego, Kansas. In addition, there are three grandchildren, Kate, Adam and Rachel Fechter. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Addison and Adler Fechter. He was preceded in death by his, sister Edith Torrey, of Wamego, and his brother, Harold Fechter, who was killed in action during the liberation of Italy during World War II. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church of Wamego. The family will greet friends at the church prior to the service, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Memorials are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project, and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, PO Box 48, 66547.
