Norma Jean "Cookie" Huston, 67, of Wamego, died Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at Valley Vista Good Samaritan Center in Wamego.
She was born March 30, 1941 in Garnett, Kansas the daughter of Boyd C. and Lodesa D. (Rea) Mathews. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1959 and later obtained her CNA/CMA nursing licenses. Norma worked at Sunflower Ammunition Plant in the early 60’s and later McCall Pattern Company, Westmoreland Community Care Home, Valley Vista Good Samaritan Center, Harmony Gardens Greenhouse and was a homecare nurse for many families in the area. On February 14, 1959 she married Larry Ray Huston in Princeton, Kansas. The couple later divorced and he preceded her in death in 2006.
One thing Cookie will always be remembered for is the beautiful craft work that she did and so generously passed on to everyone she knew.
She is survived by: her sons, Rodney Huston and his partner Kylee Hainey of Wamego, KS and Dennis Huston and his partner Kim Taylor of Shawnee, KS; her daughters, Lisa Huston of Manhattan, KS and Dana Zellers and husband Mike of Littleton, CO; her sisters, Frances McElwain of St. Joseph, MO, Nadine Branic of Grandview, MO, Glenda Satterfield of Fargo, ND and Vicki Asbury of Wamego, KS; her brothers, Joe Mathews of Greenville, SC and Jerry Mathews of Osawatomie, KS; her 24 grandchildren and her 21 great-grandchildren. Norma was preceded in death by her mother and father, her brother Richard Mathews, her sister Joyce McBride and her daughters Susan Neal and Lori Huston.
Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday February 13th, 2009 at Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego with the Rev. Dr. Tony Mattia officiating. Cremation will then be effected and graveside inurnment will be held Monday February 16th at 3:30 p.m. in Princeton Cemetery in Princeton, Kansas. Memorials have been established in her name for the Wamego Friends of the Park Train Fund and contributions may be left in care of the funeral home P.O. Box 48, Wamego 66547.
