Carl Joseph Weisbender, 79, St. George, KS passed away Saturday, October 3, 2015 at the Onaga Health and Rehab Center in Onaga, KS.
On May 4, 1936, Carl was born in Manhattan, KS to Alphonse and Violet (Kramer) Weisbender. He attended Monsignor Luckey High School in Manhattan and enlisted in the military after graduation. Carl was an avid outdoorsmen, loving to fish, hunt, garden, and go camping. He also liked to can his produce and do screen printing. He was united in marriage with Wahnetta Umscheid on May 6, 1961 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Flush, KS. Wahnetta survives of the home.
Carl enlisted in the United States Navy on February 5, 1958 in Kansas City, MO. He attended his basic training in San Diego, CA and then moved to Memphis, TN for his ATA and radio training. In 1961, he was stationed in Hawaii with the squadron searching for submarines. After a short stay in Hawaii, Wahnetta and Carl moved to Iwakuni, Japan where Carl trained squadrons until 1964. In 1965, they moved to San Diego where Carl taught. They moved again in 1969 to Moffett Field, CA. During their stay at Moffett Field, Carl went to Guam for eleven months to help build a communications facility for surveillance. After that, they moved to Miramar in San Diego where Carl taught repairs, communication skills, and flying techniques at NAS North Island. He retired from the United States Navy on October 7, 1976 and he and his family moved back to Kansas.
He is also survived by a son: Carl (Maria Sabine) Weisbender, III, Adelaide, South Australia; a daughter: Kristi (Jeff) Marler, Wamego, KS; a sister: Teresa Gunther, Lake Havasu City, Arizona; three brothers: David (Linda) Weisbender, Manhattan, KS, Timothy (Gay) Weisbender, Manhattan, KS, and Richard (Pat) Weisbender, Manhattan, KS; one grandchild: Daniel Weisbender; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a son: Kevin Weisbender, and three brothers: Michael Weisbender, Russel Weisbender, and John Weisbender.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 10, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Flush, KS. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Carl will lie in-state on Friday, October 9, 2015 from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m. and visitation to follow from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego.
