Gail Johnson Sweany, 97, of Roeland Park, KS, formerly of Belvue, KS, passed away Tuesday, October 20, 2015, at Brighton Gardens of Prairie Village, KS. Graveside services will be held at Belvue Cemetery, Belvue, KS, at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 27, 2015.
Gail was born on March 26, 1918 in Belvue, KS, to David and Goldie Johnson. She had one sister, Ruth, who preceded her in death several years ago. She graduated from Wamego High School and also attended Kansas State. Gail was united in marriage to Gordon O. Sweany on July 15, 1939. He preceded her in death in 2001.
She served as City Clerk for the City of Roland Park for over 40 years. Following her retirement, she served two terms as City Council Woman and on various committees. A city park was named after her in 1997. She was also active in the Republican Party for several years, and was a Precinct Committee Woman for several terms. Gail was a founding member of the Old Mission Methodist Church, then meeting at the Fairway Theatre prior to construction of the church, and also served on various church committees.
Survivors include two nephews: Richard G. Duree (Carol), and Stephen A. Duree (Gail); and several great-nephew and great-nieces. Long time friend Robert Wendel and family also survive. They have been active in her care since her husband’s death. Gail has been generous in her support of many friends for many years. She will be missed greatly by all.
