Rita Pearl Shirlene Quigley-¬Johnson, age 55 young, of Manhattan, KS and formerly of Westmoreland, KS, passed away at Via Christi Hospital-Manhattan on November 7th, 2015 from her battle with Multiple Myeloma. She went peacefully with an abundance of family and friends that helped her through her journey with unconditional love and support.
Rita was born on November 22nd, 1959 in Wellington, Kansas and was later adopted by Steve and Pearl Quigley of Blaine, Kansas. Later in life she found her biological mother, Freda Jackson Humes, and shared her life with her and step¬father, Samuel Humes. She was united in marriage on October 25th, 1981 in Fostoria, Kansas at the Fostoria Baptist Church to Thomas Andrew Johnson of Manhattan for 34 beautiful years.
She graduated from Westmoreland High School in 1978. She devoted her life to her husband, children, family and friends. She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening and learning her family history through genealogy. Rita will be remembered for her quirky smile, her strong compassion for other people no matter who they were, and her devotion to her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband Thomas Johnson; four children and five grandchildren: son Matthew Steven Johnson (partner Lynzee Green and grandson Mason), daughter Alissa Kaye Johnson (partner Thomas Hess and grandson Landen James), all of Manhattan, and son Jonathan Robert Andrew Johnson (partner Chelsie Williams and grandchildren Dalton, Zarek, and Brody) of Topeka, and youngest daughter Hannah Pearl Johnson age 15 of the home; and one sister Cindy Lou Zeigler of Burr Oak, Kansas. Rita is also survived by her many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her brothers Alexis Quigley and Randy Jones, her parents, Steve and Pearl Quigley and her biological mother Freda Jackson Humes.
Funeral services for Rita will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 11, 2015, at Trinity Baptist Church of Wamego. Rita will lie in-state Wednesday at the church with family greeting friends beginning at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Westmoreland City Cemetery.
